When Can You Run With a Baby in a Jogging Stroller?

Short answer

Each maker sets its own rule. BOB Gear says the Revolution Flex 3.0 seat is for jogging from 8 months; Baby Jogger says to consult a pediatrician before jogging with a baby under 6 months; UPPAbaby says jogging is for once a child holds its head up unassisted and to ask a physician. Younger babies ride in an adapted infant car seat at walking pace.

What the makers say

None of the makers here gives a single age for every case; they tie it to development and defer to a doctor. The rule printed on each stroller's own page is the one that applies to it, and each jogger's page here quotes it.

What makes a stroller a jogger

A front wheel that locks straight, larger tires (air-filled on the BOB and Baby Jogger Summit models), a wrist strap, and often a hand brake for hills. The Chicco Activ3's hand control is a parking brake, not a running brake, and its page says so.

What owners do in practice

Most owners waited until about six to eight months, or until the baby could sit unassisted, before they ran; a minority started earlier with a pediatrician's go-ahead, usually on smooth pavement. Owners repeat that an infant car seat or a bassinet on a jogger is for walking only, because it sits high and makes the stroller easier to tip.

Plenty of jogging-stroller owners rarely run at all. They bought it for the push on gravel, grass or snow, which is one reason used joggers are easy to find cheaply.

  • When Can a Baby Ride in the Stroller Seat?

It depends on the stroller, and the maker says which. 53 of the 187 strollers here are newborn-ready as sold, with a seat rated from birth or a bassinet in the box. The rest need a bassinet, an insert or an infant car seat, or are not meant for babies at all.

Side-by-side doubles are wider but both children get the view and the same seat. Tandems keep single-stroller width by putting one seat behind the other. Sit-and-stand models pair a seat with a bench or platform for an older child. Check the in-use width against your narrowest doorway.
