Side-by-Side, Tandem or Sit-and-Stand: Choosing a Double

Short answer

Side-by-side doubles are wider but both children get the view and the same seat. Tandems keep single-stroller width by putting one seat behind the other. Sit-and-stand models pair a seat with a bench or platform for an older child. Check the in-use width against your narrowest doorway.

Doorways and trunks

Makers often say a side-by-side "fits through a standard doorway" without defining one. The in-use width in the table is the number to hold against a tape measure. Folded, side-by-sides stay wide; tandems and sit-and-stands fold long instead.

Before you buy a double

Ask whether the older child will actually ride. With a gap of two to three years, many owners say the toddler walked, refused the stroller or rode a board, and the double saw a few months of use; an equally large group used theirs daily for years. A ride-along board on a single stroller is the most common substitute, and owners use one until about four or five, though a minority find their feet hit it or the stroller pushes harder.

On a single-to-double, check the second seat's limits against the older child. The UPPAbaby Vista is the case owners raise most: its add-on seat has a lower limit than the main seat, and they report tall toddlers outgrowing it while the double was still needed.

Each maker sets its own rule. BOB Gear says the Revolution Flex 3.0 seat is for jogging from 8 months; Baby Jogger says to consult a pediatrician before jogging with a baby under 6 months; UPPAbaby says jogging is for once a child holds its head up unassisted and to ask a physician. Younger babies ride in an adapted infant car seat at walking pace.

A travel system is a stroller plus an infant car seat that clicks onto it. Some pairings attach directly; most need an adapter, which may be included or sold separately. 33 of the 187 strollers here take at least one seat with no adapter, and nearly all of those pairings are the stroller maker's own seats.
