When Can a Baby Ride in the Stroller Seat?

Short answer

It depends on the stroller, and the maker says which. 53 of the 187 strollers here are newborn-ready as sold, with a seat rated from birth or a bassinet in the box. The rest need a bassinet, an insert or an infant car seat, or are not meant for babies at all.

Four ways a stroller handles a newborn

A seat that lies flat or converts to a carriage, sometimes with an insert, can be rated from birth. A bassinet is a separate flat carrycot that sits on the frame; some strollers include one and some sell it separately. A travel system clicks an infant car seat onto the frame. And some strollers start at three to six months and take no car seat.

Makers do not always agree with themselves: Nuna rates the TRIV next from birth but recommends using a PIPA car seat in it until about six months. Where a maker says something like that, the stroller's page here repeats it.

What it means for weight

A seat rated from birth adds nothing to carry. A bassinet adds its own weight: Bugaboo publishes both figures, and the Dragonfly Plus gains 1.2 lb with its bassinet fitted while the Fox 5 Renew gains about 2.9 lb. Where a bassinet or car seat is sold separately, the stroller page cannot tell you the total, so this site leaves it blank.

How long the newborn setup lasts

Shorter than most parents plan for. Most owners say their baby outgrew the bassinet, or started fussing to see out, somewhere around three to five months and moved to the reclined seat. A sizeable minority used the bassinet every day as a place to nap on the go and felt it earned its price.

The infant car seat phase usually ends early too. Owners describe moving to a convertible seat that stays in the car somewhere between five and eight months, once the carrier got too heavy to haul around, and the click-into-the-stroller setup ends with it. Some kept clicking the seat in until their baby's first birthday or a little past it, so treat a travel system as a few months of convenience rather than the whole first year.

A travel system is a stroller plus an infant car seat that clicks onto it.
